My creative Refugee Story

The other day we went on a Refugee walk, and so today one of the task options was to create my own creative Refugees. Refugees are people that flee from their homes to go somewhere else. Because they are now unable to stay where they are. In class we had also been reading a book called refugee, it was about 3 different stories about 3 different kids. All the kids are refugees and are from different decades. Down below this piece of writing is my story.

Have you read the book Refugee?

The trekking was tough, I had to carry my weight in rocks, sticks and

shelter supplies. I could not keep my two feet balanced. Mainly, because

of the heavy cargo, and harsh weather. The rain speckling 24/7 on us, the muddy mush becoming thick and slowly hardening on my feet, then

once I stand in a puddle every few seconds, it all seeps into my hole

covered, empty feeling and very old converse. The star logo fading to

anyones eye. My friends and family stare at me through soaking faces

and dirt covered glasses. I see one of my mates pick up an old piece of

twine, from an old shoe lace. I walk over, they say that this is good rope

for our shelter. That motivational speech I heard from them, seemed

to me motivational. I got everyone in the group ready and we trudged on,

all my friends panting behind me. I heard voices and it was getting dark,

I looked behind me only to see the speckling of people turning on

flashlights. I looked at my group unaware of what was coming, the

people ended up spotting us. I had to get us away fast. I called on the

rest of us to hurry up. Trying not to startle them too much. We start

jogging, which turns into a run, then a run, then a sprint, and then a

scream sprint. Then I hear gravel crunching from the men chasing us,

but ignore it. I tell my group to run faster and they do, then I throw

a hat on the floor of one direction and we go the opposite. Then

I grab someone’s bag. That had a couple of rocks in it, and the bag cost

about $0.10, then I throw it the opposite way that we are going. We

start running and running until we come to a clearing, surrounding it

was trees and thorns. Just the place to hide out for the night. I get

everyone in with the help of my friends. Once inside I pull out the

shelter equipment and give it to all the adults. They make a shelter

within 15 minutes. Once that is done I grab out the rice and water. I

start to make the rice but then I realise that I left the Firestarter

at home. I start to panic and go around everyone looking for a lighter.

No one has one but someone comes up to me 30 minutes later, with a

handmade bow drill. They then teach me how to use the bow drill. I'm

surprised with their skills and get them to make the fire for our meal.

Once they made the fire I start preparing the rice properly, and I get

the water from someone's hydro flask. It's all old, blue, and scratched.

I thank them for letting me borrow their only water, and I call them over

to help me do the honour of pouring in the water.

Then I dish up all the children a big handful of rice, in a plastic cup that we found on the way here. That was in someone’s skip. They had

to eat it with their bare hands. The thing is that their hands were

covered in mud, dirt and dog poop. After 30 minutes the children

started feeling sick, and I wasn't sure how this was going to go.

Because we had no medicine.

Sustainable Pot Plant

W.A.L.T. show a way we can show stewardship.

Over the past few weeks we have been making pot plants, I will post my photo on a separate post. We first had to design the pot plant we had chosen to make. Mine doesn't particularly look like my drawing. I thought the original looked kind of boring so I added a lot.

1~ Why should we be sustainable?

For the environment and the world. Eventually, there is not going to be a world to call home. Because of our common usage of plastics, gases and harmful things. We have become more advanced in pollution. So we should be more sustainable so there is a longer future for the next thousands of generations!

2~ How have we shown that we are sustainable?

By making recycled pot plants. By taking a plastic environmentally harmful object and making it into something that holds the environment. For example, take the things that are killing our environment and putting something from it into it.

3~ Why should we help our environment?

To keep the generations constant. So that there are other generations to come by. So they save the environment. And it helps with our health, not as many gases poisoning our lungs.

4~ Explain your process!

First off, we designed our pot plant.

Secondly, we grabbed a bottle and cut it into the desired shape.

Third, paint our desired design. I did a panda with rainbow hair.

Now put the soil into your pot, and plant the seed.

Second to lastly, water the seed.

Last off, wait for it to grow.

My amazing marble game

For inquiry this time we looked at marbles. Then I made a slideshow on my own marble game.

I don't have a name for my marble game, do you have any suggestions?

What is a marble game?
A marble game is a game that is played with marbles. For example my game is a marble game because it involves marbles and marbles is my main point of the game.

It was fun to create the slideshow and the image for my game. I thought that my game seemed pretty cool.

I hope you like it, please comment on my blog.

Thanks, Jennah.

My visual Mihi

W.A.L.T.  Identify who we are using a visiul Mihi.

Steps  on How to Make your own Mihi.
1- Use a pencil to draw a rough outline of your dislikes and likes (in one corner). Your flag/culture in another corner, add a photo of yourself in the culture corner. Either drawn by you or a digital printed picture of you. In one of the top corners But your family in Koro form. And in the remaining box put your Mountain and river.
2- Go over your pencil with a black crayon, and for your more detailed work with a vivid.
3- Once you have outlined your work use dye to colour in your artwork.

Why did I chose these symbols?
I chose these symbols because they represent me and what I like. They show other people what I like.
My mouth symbol stands for how I like to talk. The netball player stands for how I like to play netball. The donut and lollies stand for my love of sweets. The dogs stand for my favourite animal, dogs. Mathematics  cause I love Mathematics (most of the time). Vegetables are the one thing I put that I dislike, I also do not like cream cheese but I did not remember that. Last but not least being a veternarian is one of my likes.

This is my Visual Mihi, in the left corner there is a picture of me. I am animated though. Also in the left corner is the New Zealand flag, since I was born in New Zealand and my parents were to.
The right corner has my dislikes and likes, but I only had 1 dislike.
In my top right corner is my family in Koro form. I am in the middle, My brothers are in the corner, my parents are down the bottom, and my dog is the other koro.
The top left corner has my mountains and river, Mount Cook and the Waimakiri.

What would I do different next time?
If I did it different I would colour in my detailed pictures and and then dye the background. All the fine detail made the dye travel to the background and mixed the background colour.

Saving Sand dunes

Today we did a programme on our Sand dunes, and how they form, how they get destroyed.

They taught us that there is 3 main things that destroy sand dunes over time,
1) People
2) Wind
3) water/ocean

Did you know how the sand gets to the beach well here is the way it works.
So part of the mountains break off and breaks down and ends up in the river which ends up in the ocean and then it blows onto the beach.

Sand dunes also help with Tsunami´s or stormy waves because when huge waves come, the sand dunes help hold off the waves.

On the sand dunes there are 4 main plants that grow and help the sand stay together.
1. Pingao
2. Spinifex
3. Ice plant
4. Marram

The man that taught us about sand dunes told us a story, from about 15 years ago, and it is true. Here it is: Once there was an elderly couple that had a house across from some sand dunes, they phoned the council and complained about how they could not see the ocean. People agreed with the couple so the council got a digger to take a scoop out of the sand dunes. The two sides of the remaining sand dunes started blowing through the middle, unfortunately the sand started flying into the couples roof, and eventually the roof became to heavy with all the sand and so it collapsed. The couple were not hurt, but after the roof fell there was about 2 tons of sand in the roof.
There is a lesson in that story, do not mess with nature.
